THE CIOB GLOBAL STUDENT CHALLENGE 2016
The Chartered Institute of Building Global Student Challenge is a competition that simulates the construction industry. The challenge utilises MERIT (Management Enterprise Risk Innovation and Teamwork), an online game which simulates the management of a construction company (CIOB, 2015). Our team from the University of Cape Town, consisting of four members (Brendan Ardagh, myself, James Myburgh and Alain Alexander, from left to right) formed a virtual construction company called Prestige Worldwide. Mark Massyn (standing) mentored us, providing us with useful advice and support throughout the competition. The 'early years' of the competition took place over a six-week period whereby we were required to make strategic and operational decisions about company marketing, estimating, tendering, finance and personnel management. In the final submission of the 'early years' our team placed fourth and were eligible to attend the finals in Hong Kong to compete against five other teams...
